230 Letters to the Governor and Council

May 3

from Annapolis last on which Mr John Taylor told him that they

were Acquaintances of his son Billeys and that they wanted to cross
over to Virginia to get to Rappahanock to get out to Sea and this
deponant further sayeth that when he & Doctr Robinson got to
Taylor's house that the sd Taylor with the other three persons were
drinking Brandy and they were asked to drink and did drink freely
with them & that while they remained at the said Taylor's house
Taylor with one of the three persons went out in the field and re-
mained there a considerable while and this deponant further sayeth
that he always suspected that the said John Taylor was never a friend
to the Present measurs of his general Character in his neighbourhood
as an honest man was bad

lives on St Inegoes Creek near the Ware House whom is a great foa
to Mr John Taylor living in Saint Marys County Near the same Place
which Have Behaved as a good freind to the Union flag In Distress
which made their Escape from ye Prison out of & ye Capturd Jack
of the Lantorn

St Marys County ss. Came Benja Williams before me one of the
May 1. 1781 Magistrates of this County and made Oath

on the Holy Evangels of Almighty God, That he this deponet took
this Paper out of the Pocket of the Person who Called himself
Arthur Gage & who stands on the Other side as a Subscriber thereto.

[Archd Buchanan, To Thomas Sim Lee Esqr] (p Capt Slaymaker)

This will be handed to you by Captn Slamaker who was along
time in the State Service in the Ship Defence, but was taken in
the Buckskin he was first Lieutenant of her and is now a Prisoner,
he is very desirous off Getting Exchanged and theirs a person here of
the same Rank for which he thinks he can get Exchanged, One Cham-
bers Lieutenant of the Privater Lord Cornwallass but was prize
Master on Board of a Ship retaken by the Antilope Captn Folgier.
Chambers is now here, if you can Assist him in getting the business
done I will be much obligd to you. Cap Slamaker has a large Family
who depends upon him for Support
