222 Letters to the Governor and Council

Manner that I will upon my arrival in New York use every En-
deavour to effect an Exchange of William Middleton late Com-
mander of the Boat Dolphin that belonged to the State of Maryland,
in my Place & stead and in Case such Exchange cannot be accom-
plished I will immediately return to Annapolis in said State of Mary-
land myself as a Prisoner of War.

[Willm Grayson, War Office, to His Excellency the Governor]

In a letter from Baron Steuben of the 2 Ist Instant the Board are
informed that he is in great want of powder and lead for the use of
the troops under his command; The Board will be glad to know
whether it is in your power to give him any assistance as soon as
possible. Should you be capable of complying with our request, you
will be pleased to order it on, and do us the honor of informing us of
the quantity, which will be replaced, as soon as the situation of the
public magazines will admit of it

I have receiv'd the articles mention'd in your Letter by Capt
Tildon except the cannon which I expect over from Baltimore in a
few days, also am much obliged by the kind attention given to our
requisition & if not inconvenient I hope your Excellency will cause
the Gun locks, to be sent by the Bearer, we have been very successful
in recruiting already I have passed thirty one recruits almost all of
whom are extremely good, we have only eight more to get & one
week to get them in, should we compleat our number within three or
four days I presume a Draft may be dispensed with

May it Please Your Excelency At this Alarming Crisis in the
Absence of my Colll I am Induced to Lay before you the State of
the Company I have the Honor of Commanding & I hope you will
Excuse the freedom I take in so doing. I have not one Subalton
Death & Resignations have deprived me of them ;
The State of my Compy was in Writting given to Colll Saml
Smith some months past with a. Recomendation of such who I thought
should be Commissioned & who were willing to Except of the Trust
that might be Reposed in them.
As no Commissions for the Subaltons has been sent to me I can
Only say that altho, I have a full Company it is out of my power to
Collect them together without Officers to Assist me, I am well Con-
vinced they are good & Trew, And do pray your Excellency to send
Commissions as to you shall seem meet, and do Assure you that when
