Gov. Lee.]
In the present alarming Situation of our affairs we shou'd be want-
ing in attention to the Inhabitants of this Town & County if we did
not apply in the most earnest manner to your Excellency to supply
us with the means of defending ourselves from an Enemy so lately
& so frequently almost at our Doors: a particular Part of the State
when invaded has a Right to expect assistance from the more power-
full parts of it. Local circumstances render it Difficult for the In-
habitants of this Shore exposed as they are to the utmost Calamaties
of War & Piracies to expect assistance from our more powerfull
neighbours of the western shore: the greater then unquestionably is
the need that we shou'd have the means of Defence in our own
hands. We can not but hope, it is a fact, not within your Excellency's
Knowledge that out of 1700 effective men in this County, not more
than 150 of the number can be armed, not a single field peice, nor
