In consequence of your Order, I have Ordered the Captains of the
Militia of this County to call their Compys together immediately and
to order them to hold themselves in readiness to March when ordered
agreeable to your Directions the Publick Arms in this County is in
very bad order, but have employed a man to put them in immediate
repair. I have likewise ordered the arms of such of the Militia who
are not able to have them repaired, to be Repaired at the Publick ex-
pence, The Publick Lead is in Barrs, have employed the bearer Lieut
James Skinner, to run it into Balls & make them into Cartridges,
and he now waites on your Excellency for Paper & Molds we have
no Cartridge Boxes to the Arms, neither is there any scabboards or
belts to the Bayonetts, belonging to the Arms, I must beg to be fur-
nished with Boxes & Belts.

sented & paid at sight, therefore we shall be much oblidged to you
to send p Mr John Smith £3000. which was the Amount thereof.

[James Wood, Richmond, to Gov. Lee.] (Favd by Capt. Dorsey)
I have been here some Days on the Business of supplies of Beef
and Pork for the use of the Post at Frederick Town; but am sorry
to inform your Excellency that I find a fixed Determination in the
Executive of this State not to Contribute any thing towards the sub-
sistence of the British Troops of Convention in Maryland, in all
Probability you will have their reasons in a Letter from Governor
Jefferson before this reaches you, the Assembly had Resolved that
the German Troops shou'd also be sent to your State, but upon my
assuring the Executive that they cou'd not be subsisted and that I was
well assured that you would not consent to receive them, they have
Directed that they remain for the Present at the Barracks.
I am Desired by Govr Jefferson to inform you that Colo Crockett's
Regiment of State Troops now at Frederick Town are Ordered to
Fort Pitt, and that their march will in all Probability be in two or
three weeks I must therefore beg you will be Pleased to Direct that
one Hundred and fifty men with their proper Officers be in readiness
to relieve Colo Crockett if militia are Ordered on this Service it wou'd
give me Great Pleasure cou'd Colo Baker Johnson have the Com-
mand of them.
