148 Letters to the Governor and Council

March 25

[Richd Barnes, Leod Town His Excellency Thos Sim Lee Esqr]

From the information I have recd of the Select Militia we have
about seventy engaged for that service, which I now inform you of
in order that we may be supplyed with that quantity of Arms, which
are necessary for us to make any tolerable defence for the protection
of the Calry And unless something is done for the securety of the
Inhabitants, bad consequences may arise, as I have been well in-
formed that many of the Inhabitants of the Coty on the water had
much rather lay at the mercy of the Enemy than have the Militia
called to protect them owing as I suppose to their knowledge of the
defenceless situation they are in If we could be supplyed with about
seventy stand of Arms more than what we have I shuld be glad of
your opinion whether it would not be advisable, whilst the Enemy
are in the Bay to keep about sixty more men constantly patroling
from one part of the Coty to the other in order to prevent disatisfac-
tion and the negroes going to the Enemy as from the late conduct
of the Negroes when those Ships were in St Marys I am well satis-
fied the greatest part of them that are in the Coty would join them,
as I am well informed upwards of twenty five offered themselves to
those Ships the night they were in St Marys. Your answer to the
above will oblige Your Most obt servt

Letter 39

[Jas Hamilton, Frederick's Town, to Gov. Lee.]

I have the honor to inform you, that Mr D. P. Master Genl
Geddes & Mr Weir Surgeon Genl are served writs at the instance of
Serg' McLean of the 21st Regt for monies due him by those two
Gentlemen during the time he acted as Clerk to the Governor, which
Debt neither of them refuse; But was postponed paying till such
time as inquiry was made whether or not said Mc Lean had not in-
deavor'd to pass more Bills than that of a hundred pounds he was
lately tryed for at the Court here, and which tho' acquitted by the
Court for want of evidence bears the strongest marks he was con-
cerned in.
