January 1-December 31, 1781 117

I do not intend from this representation that the Merchants shou'd
furnish the Enterprize with every thing that is to be procur'd from
Baltimore, at their private expence. I wou'd only propose to your
consideration the propriety of forming a Committee out of your
body for the purpose of giving effect & furtherance to the measure
taken by the Public to such a point as you may judge proper, or as
may be done without material injury to Yourselves
The Marquis cannot write you himself in the first instance not
before he knows Your disposition or arrangements. If you do any
thing I beg it may be instant, that we may have it to say to ourselves
the expedition has not fail'd for want of what support we cou'd give
it. As it is probable another Detachment will follow this we shall
want more Vessels, your assistance may also become essential dur-
ing the whole course of our operations.
