many small Children he applied to me for Corn & flour &c but shall
not deliver any till I receive your Orders, on this head
William Dent of Guilford County and State of North Carolina
having furnished the Troops of the United States with two Thou-
sand pounds of Salt Pork — Two hundred Bushells of Indian Corn
and Ten bushells of Meal on Conditions of being furnished with the
like quantity on his way to Maryland or in that State I do therefore
hereby request all Commissarys and Forage Masters to Issue to the
said William Dent or his order (not exceeding the Quantity above
mentioned) taking his receipt for what each may Issue and Certify-
ing the same on the back of this order — given under my hand at
Guilford Court House in the State aforesaid this 6th Feby Anno

[Joseph Dashiell, Worcester County, to Gov. Lee.]

The night before I left Annapolis, Colo James Brice Inform'd me
that the Govr & Council had ordered to be sent to Cambridge for the
use of this County, A hundred Cartouch Boxes & a quantity of flints
for the use of this County, In consequence of which I hired a Cart
and sent for them, but got nothing as you will see by the Inclosed
letter from Mr Stevens, this Disapointl Cost the State One hundred
& Eighty seven pounds seven shillings & six pence, since which I am
informed that the Stores ware actualy sent, and that the officer of
that County, has distributed them to their Militia, if that is the Case,
I hope I shall have an Order for them, and Capt John Smott who is
now in Somoset Can lodge them with me on his return home, the
flints we are in Grate want of as none are to be had heare, and my
Brother Informs me that they have none in Somerset worth a farth-
ing, I rote sum time ago for a Commission for Mr Henry Dennis, a
Leiut in Capt Layfield Company I wish much to have it sent as he
is afraid of being made a prisoner every night of his life, Colo Saml
Handy likewise applyed to me to get a Commission for Mr Joshua
Hodg: I Lieut & Thoms Smith 2 Lieut of Capt Matthew Purnels
Comy which hope will Come by the Barer, I am sorry to Inform you
that only Twenty One men turned out in this County as Select Mili-
tia men, tho I am still in hopes we shall make near all our select
militia, the field officers have not made their Returns to me yet or I
should have Inclosed them to your Excellency. Joseph Whalland that
old offender is down in Somerset plundering Again and we have
Reason to believe that the Gaoler in Baltimore is alone to blame as
