Dear Sir The foregoing is Copy of a letter I recd from Colo
Smith respecting Beef &c by which you will see how cautious the
people are & the fears they have respecting the New money. I am
sensible how much depends on its gaining an immediate Credit &
shall do all in my power to gain it one, but I am still of opinion that
it Chiefly depends on the conduct of the Wealthy traders in Balti-
more whether it passes Current or not. I was at Newport Mill on
Monday we had then taken in there 1700 Bushells of Wheat & about
100 at Mr Laceys Mill, it would come in very fast if I had money to
pay for it, in procuring this I have advanced all the salt I had by me
& drawn orders on the Stores in Town untill my Credit is on the
Stretch. I must request you to lay Colo Smiths letter before His
Excellency & Council & I should be glad to have their instructions
on the subject of it by return of Post as I expect him in Town on
Sunday & it may save me a ride of 80 miles. I have no doubt of a
supply of Cash as soon as possible, on its being speedy depends my
