Desires. Your Stores that were left at the Indian Landing were
ordered to be removed to George Town on Patowmack, but when we
were apprised of the Enemy's Intentions against Alexandria, Orders
were given to stop them ten Miles on this side which is unquestionably
a Place of Security and in your Route from Baltimore to the South-
ward. We are convinced the disaffected and Emissaries of the Enemy
are dispersed through the State, and are busy in collecting and sup-

plying them with Provision, and communicating every kind of In-
telligence by which Means they have Notice of all our Preparations
and Movements. It is our Desire that Examples should be made of
them in the speediest Manner whenever detached. We have directed
the Lieutenant of Harford County to go to Gun Powder Creek, and
make immediate Inquiry after Major McPherson, that Part of the
County is well affected and we think you need not be uneasy about his
Safety; a Letter from a Gentleman of Alexandria mailed at 7 "Clock
yesterday Morning informs us that the Enemy are moving up
Patowmack in considerable Force consisting of eight Vessels of
various Sizes, that the last Accounts say they are above Dumfries
and that they have no Doubt but that they are intended against Alex-
andria, where every Exertion is making to oppose them, we shall
give you most speedy and frequent Intelligence of every movement
and Design of the Enemy as soon as it is obtained.

The Detachment under the Marquis Fayette is on its way from
Elk to the Southward, and is to take Baltimore in their Route a
Number of Waggons Teams and Drivers with Horses will be want-
ing to rcleive those brought from Elk and to transport the Artillery
Stores and Baggage we cannot ascertain the Number necessary but
expect the Marquis will send an Officer forward to have them ready
and therefore desire and authorise you to impress such Numbers of
Waggons Teams and Drivers and Horses as the Marquis may order.

We request you will forward immediately six Barrels of Musquet
Powder to the Head of Severn, which is to be delivered to Capt.
Philemon Warfield, in complying with this Order you will take care
not to leave the Magazine at Baltimore destitute of musquet Powder,
and if this order wil comprehend all you have, you will diminish the
quantity to be sent. You will send us a Return of the Powder &ca
under your care distinguishing the musquet from the Cannon Powder
