[Moses Rawlings Fort Frederick to Gov Lee]
Sir I have the honour to Inform your Excellency that I have at

this time about 400 prisoners, in this Garrison, and Expect 200

more Daily, so that with the guard the Issues will Exceed 600
Rations pr Day, and I have not at this time on hand more Provisions
of the meat kind then will serve them one month from this date,
and Dont see any Likelyhood of geting any more without tis in
your Excellencys Power to furnish me with a sum of Continental
Currency The new Emission I brought from Annapolis I cannot
pass any of it in this part of the Country, our Collector Cant pay
me any of the order I have on him at this time as he has no money
in his hands, and Indeed he Expects when the next assesment is
due that the people will pay of Chiefly in Certificates.
The winter is now approaching fast and there ought at the least
be one hundred Thousand weight of beef Laid in at this Magazine
If I had at this time a sum of money I Could buy a great many
Cattle, but the Time for buying will soon be over, the Purchases
ought to be Compleated in three weeks from this, I know the
scarcity of Money & am sorry to ask it, but Necessity oblidges me,
I Leave your Excellency to Guess my situation with this number
of Prisoners without Provisions.
I am in great Distress for Money to pay of Waggoners wood
Cuters Carpenters, for flour Barrels and to buy Forage for the
waggon horses.

I have the pleasure to inform your Excellency that I have receivd
for the Last Tax upwards of 3000 bushels of wheat and about 4000
weight of Flour, tis not at this time in my Power to send an Exact
Account, as I have Two or three Mills in the upper part of this
County that I have not had an oppertunity,to procure the returns
from, but shall send them by the next Letter.
Agreeable to Yr Excellencys Request I have bought Linen for
Capt Reid & his officers, and also Linen & Stockins for his Soldiers.
I should be glad to be informd what a soldiers pay is monthly,
Capt Reid would be much oblidgd to your Excellency for an order
on the Clothier for a suit of Cloaths for himself and officers, if
obtain'd Capt Jacobs who will have the honour to Deliver this will
bring them who will also wait your Excellencies Commands to me,
I hope yr Excellcy will order up them Soldiers you were Speaking
off to act as a guard at this post
