of the Council of Maryland. 133

my present situation, my Letters to the Legislature were to the
same purport. However I endeavored to obtain all the information
in my power on the Subject; in order to transmit it to the Assembly
& for this reason wrote to London & to B: Franklin Esqr I received
no answer to my letters to London, & my last on this Subject from
his Excellency is dated the 17th of June in which he informs me that
he had written to the Gentlemen in London and Inclosed them the
act of Assembly, but had not then received their answer, I therefore
take the liberty of advising you, Gentlemen, to address Dr Franklin
on this subject, it will be particularly distressing to the State to be
disapointed of the supplies they have ordered in Expectation of their
being enabled to pay for them by these bills, funds for which they
have had in the Bank of England several years it is Indeed I believe
the only State of the union which hath a fund in Europe & also one
of the States in the union the most capable of fulfilling its engage-
ments at home and abroad, if the British Governmt interposes & pre-
vents the payment of this money the state hath an Easy remedy, they
may & I think will confiscate and sell immediately all British Prop-
erty in the State & there is for a very great amot so that the Holders
of the bills will in a very little time be reimbursed any advances
which they may make, it would be particularly pleasing to me to have
been of any use to Mr Stewart, with whose son in the American
Army, I am well acquainted and whose gallantry would have distin-
guished him in any Country. I beg you to inform me of the success
that attends your further inquiries on this subject & at the same time
permit me thank you for the obliging offers & intelligence contained
in yr letter in return be assured that I shall be happy in occasions of
shewing my sence of them
P. S. any letters that you may be so obliging as to address me in
future will reach me with more safety under Cover to Messrs Drouil-
het & Co Bankers at Madrid.
