Wednesday Morning, December 23. 1747
The House met according to Adjournment &c.
Upon further and mature Consideration of that Part of the Ex-
tract of the Duke of Newcastle's Letter transmitted by Governor
Shirley and Commodore Knowles to his Excellency the Governor
and laid before this House which relates to raising Money or Credit
for Payment of the Forces raised in this Province and transported
to Albany for His Majesty's Service in an intended Expedition
against Canada in Pursuance of a Letter of his Grace the Duke of
Newcastle's as Principal Secretary of State to the Governor of this
Province, dated Whitehall April 9. 1746. Resolved Nemine contra-
dicente, that inasmuch as this Province hath been at very great Ex-
pence in Encourageing the Inlistment of 300 Men for the said Service
maintaining them here, transported them to Albany in the Province
of New York and supplying them with Provisions there; and that
at present the people labour under very heavy Taxes and other
great Difficulties too tedious to enumerate: Therefore this House
cannot consistent with their Duty to their Constituents further
burthen them with the raising Money for Payment of the said
Forces.
And Ordered That Mr Philip Hammond Doctor Charles Carroll
Colo Hooper Mr Key and Mr Lloyd prepare an Address to his
Excellency the Governor acquainting him with the sense of this
House thereupon accordingly and that no further Business lies
before us.
