Mr Calder brings in the following Address; Viz.
The humble Address of the House of Delegates.
May it please your Excellency
In Compliance with your Message, communicated at last Sessions
to both Houses of Assembly, we then nominated Col. Robert King,
and Doctor Charles Carroll, two of our Members, to join with such
as should be appointed by the Upper House, as Commissioners to
negotiate a Treaty with the Six Nations of Indians; and as it was
understood by that Message; that the meeting would have been
at Albany, or some other Remote place to the Northward; We then
drew up some Instructions to be Privately made use of by our Mem-
bers, in their way, and during that negotiation, as well for their own
Information, as that upon their Return, they might be the better
able to advise your Excellency, and the people of this province, of

our Situation with Regard to those Indians , and not, as we under-
stand it has been insinuated, as directions to be observed in making
the Treaty, or to be in anything binding on them, in the Manage-
ment of that affair, other than as to what Relates to the Sum of
Money to be given as a present to the Indians, and the Cause of their
uneasiness. We send your Excellency a Copy of those Instructions,
and by the nature of them, We think it cannot be conceived that
they were intended in any other manner. Which was Read and
Assented to, and Signed by the Honourable Speaker.

p. 407
