May it please your Excellency.
At last November Court Negro Scipio, the Slave of Thomas
Ramsay Hodges of this County was indicted tried and found
Guilty of breaking open the Meat House of Mr Stephen West,
and Stealing from thence a quantity of Bacon. The Evidence
against him consisted of his own Confession, (which appeared
to have been Voluntarily made), and some pretty strong Cir-
cumstances evincing his Guilt; He seemed to be extremely
Ignorant, and not at all acquainted with the Penalty by Law
inflicted on the Crime he had Committed. We have directed
the Clerk to Transmit to Your Excellency a Transcript of the
Proceedings
and are Your Excellency's most Obedt Servants.
December 16th 1768.
