Post... With Regard to my Recommendations of Mr Skin-
ner Mr Young or any others I may've done either by Letter
or otherways for the appointment of Sheriffs. I desire you'l
Act with Respect to such my Recommendations on other
than is Consistent to his Lorps Affair & your own Policy in
Govermt The Persons in General mostly are offer's to me
By Merchts Trading to the Province who to get Rid of there
Requests force me to write. As to Philip Young I know
him not, you seem to think him Bad therefore follow not my
request to you. Your Brother Wm at the Council Office in-
formed me, that Sr Thos Robinson Secy of State told him that
the Roman Catholicks were too much Encouraged as he was
inform'd in Maryland yr Brother assur'd to the Contrary.
As 'tis false & groundless, I think you would do well to
Justifye the Proprietor & self to the Secy I delivered yr In-
closed to the Earl of Halifax.

Sir.

The Conveyance by this Ship, her departure being sudden,
I have but time in part to acknowledge, some Contents of
yours, viz. July the 15th August the 11th & 30'o Do with one
of no date. By yours dated, 'tis a great Concern to read of
so compleat a Defeat to His Majesty's Forces by the French
& Indians near the Banks of Monongahelia the 9th of July
with the Loss of so many brave Officers & Lives, with all
the Canon & Artillery waggons, besides Ammunition Carts
&ca The news of the Defeat must have thrown the People
of Maryland into the greatest Confusion, it being near their
Back Frontiers. His Lordship approves greatly your imme-
diate Circumspection & Step taken on the Defeat, In calling
the Assembly to take Advice & your writing Circular Letters
to have the Slaves & Convicts well observed & watched, with
your orders for the Militia of the several Counties to be
prepared to quell in Case any Insurrection should be Occa-
sioned by the Unfortunate Stroke. The Gentlemen & People
Subscribers you Mention for an Arm'd Force for the De-
fence & Protection of the Frontiers, Manifest their Duty to
