472 Correspondence of Gov. Horatio Sharpe, 1754-1765.

In order thereto, Mr Wm Gouldsborough by you is of the
Council, Mr Calvert as you offer'd him in the Land office,
Mr Stuart's remove out the office has been Occasion'd by
his being run hard by Adversaries chalenging their own
Merrit ag' him they said had none, Mr Bladen set up Mr
Tasker Junr for Deputy Secy agt Mr Bordley yr Recomendn
from you whom I had accepted of & My Lord approved, by
Letters from the Province & Merchts have joyn'd with Mr
Bladen they represented him in so disagreeable obnoxious a
manner to my Lord that I was forced to give him up as Secy
however Resolv'd their Policy shoud not take place as to Mr
Tasker Junr I therefore started Mr Plater for Secy he was so

undeniable a good man they could make no Objection agt

him therefore he has the appointment, and in Order that
Mr Stuart shoud be easy as they could make no Alligation
of Wrong agt him I therefore stood his friend & gain'd the
Proprietor's Consent as you had not desired his Removal,
however if removed, Mr Tasker Junr in his place of the Land
Office & he to succeed Mr Tasker Naval Officer of Annapolis,
Mr Bladen hesitated he Question'd whether his Nephew
wou'd accept the Remove I told him that was not with me,
if he does'nt then Mr Stuart is where he was. Here is one
Mr Harrison here whom Mr Bladen set up to succeed Mr
Plater at Patuxent the Objection with me was not to give
up Mr Bordley Quit & thinking it unjust to abandon the
Attory. General I therefore Plan'd in Regard to them both
as pr Instruction, wh My Lord approved of witht Hesitation
& I hope will show Mr Bordley his Lordps inclinations to-
wards him & a way if can be contrived to Defeat his Ad-
versaries & to his gaining favour by your Recomendation.
You will observe by Instn Mr Bordley was Naval Officer
with' Limitation & had been so, had his Adversaries Quit'd
him. I therefore form'd the last Instn to nominate him as
of Service to My Lord, in case Mr Darnell could otherways
be provided for—the Duke of New Castle is run hard in the
Political Warehouse in Britain & in Minature I with Mary-
land—By their return to you two vacancy's are in the Coun-
cil, for my part am at a Loss who to put in, & those who
have been recommend' here by others as they might be
disagreeable to you My Lord has Consented agt further
promotion therein, until he hears from you in relation there-
to. Mr Lloyd who always writes very well & obligingly of
you requests such favour for Mr Charles Goldsborough, he
has & is an opponent I observe to My Lord, if he can be
brought off to Act reasonably he is by Character a Man of
Abilities for such Station; if you approve, he has also wrote
