Appendix to Council Proceedings, 1696- 1729. 563
One other that has married the Governrs Daughter one B. M. James Browne that was in the ship Fancy but sayes he was a Vol. 25. passenger in the sd ship declares that these three persons vizt Edmund Lassell, Robt Clinton and Peter Claus was on board this ship Fancy Capt. Henry Every alias Bridgman was Com- mands as the Proclamation makes mention ot and notwith standing the Governr is about to take baile for them, & has sent for me before him & the Councill to know what I had to say against them, I told him when they were on a Tryall I would produce my Evidence tht was for the King before I thought it not materiall for fear of Corruption. Sr, I beg pardon for this scribling. Perry being in fear of loosing his tide makes this haste. I will send the particulars to the Duty of Robt Snead.
May it please yor Exncy Sr, I Writt by Mr Perry but he being in hast was forst to Right imperfit. I seizing of some Pirates & confining them as in Duty bound having an Accot of such inhuman Actions they have committed and that our factories are seiz'd, & one cutt off, thought it necessary not only to take up those as the proclamation makes mention of, but those that came in before, tht had committed the same crime, but Governr Markham with others so violently opposed me that not only threatned to Committ me, but Encourage those Pyrates to affront me, that I fear violence every minnit nit by them. He is about to erect a Court on purpose to tryc them, which I cannot see any ways to be done by Law, the intent is to cleare them before, or for fear of a power from yor having believed you may have some Ordrs from his Maty for the seizing them and their Estates, most of thm having made purchases here. I pray if yor Exncy can by any means protect me here for ser ving my King, I pray it from you. I have done nothing but according to Law but expect dayly some violence either by im prisonmt or other ways. I made bold to trouble this worthy gentleman to deliver it to yor Exncys hand which were it not for my Estate not being in order would heartily kiss this spring & pay my duty, but dare not for fear of some trick, the reason of my taking them up is for fear of their making over their estates, here being a report that there is a Power come to Seize them. All at present from Yor Exncys most humble and most obedient Servt to Command Robt Snead. Philadelphia, June 1st 1697.
