May it please yr Excy Amongst the number of those in this Province who are oblidged to yr Excy for the favour & Justice for endeavouring to preserve our ships & goods from Privatiers & Pyrates par ticularly from Capt Day and his Crew I am sure noe man hath more reason to acknowledg the benefitt recd or was more Exposed to the Danger then my Self haveing a Ship fiting out here to load in Maryland wth Toba home wth the Fleet Part of whose men run away & others that were designed to ship themselves enticed on board the Privatier wch Privatier has Sundrey times endeavred to entice those wee haue Left in the same manner by wch meanes wee are not only forced to pay them some 2 & 3 or 4 months wages before hand but Contract wth them for such Extravigent wages as never was given in that place tht Privateire incouraging them wth 3000 ll share to a man at Leaste in 3 or 4 months time wch by one meanes & other has damnified us at Least 300” in one Shipp besides the feare of Looseing Shipp & all the Particu lars of the whole refer you to the deposicion of sundry people wch shall send you by my Good freind Coll. Quary in that hight of my vexation & Disappointmt I applyed myself to Governr Markham & told him that by a Lettr I had seen from Carolina Day was dishonest & ought to have clearances examined for had embezeled his owners Suggar &Ca and for a Cloak to his Roguery Entered his Brigantine for Bristoll Loaden Suggar from Carolina where as soone as he had so done fell down to Rebellion road out of Command & there sells his whole Cargoe & setts up for a Red Sea Voyage & came here to Victuall & Equip himself whereby I thought him seizeable and wth all that I had susteined much damage already by its being tollerated & feared much greater, where-
