Town upon Potomack to invite some of the principal Indians Lib. X. of the same Town to meet his Excellency the Governor at the p. 130 house of Charles Anderson near Mononknisea at such time as shall be mentioned in his Excellencys instructions to the said Powell which Instructions follow in these words Instruc tions for Mr John Powell as followeth vizt
Imprimis You John Powell by the Appointment of the Governor and Council of this Province are to take to Your Assistance a proper Interpreter and Guide (and any other person for your Conveniency if you think fit) and to repair to the Shuano Town on Potomack (Commonly called Opessas Town) as soon as Conveniently you can and there to acquaint the Principal Indians of the said Town and on behalf of the Lord Baltimore and Charles Calvert Esqr present Governor of this Province to acknowledge the three Skins received by them in return of another present sent to them from our Governor by Charles Anderson and inform them of the Ex pectation we have had of seing them at Annapolis according to the Information we had of the said Charles Anderson but forasmuch as we Apprehend either from the Length of the way or the Unseasonableness of the weather they have not been able to come down we for their better Conveniency and to shew our Love and Friendship for them (and with desire to Live with them as Friends and Brethren) do Propose a meet ing between our Governor and some of the Council with their chiefs and some of their Great men at the house of Charles Anderson the fifth of August next but if the Indians cannot P• 131 precisely at that time meet then any time seven days before or after the said fifth day of August and there to enter into such Articles of peace and Friendship as shall be thought necessary for Cultivating an entire Friendship and Creating a good Understanding and Correspondency between our Government and the said Indians who will find our Governor ready to show himself a Friend to them upon all Occasions 2dly You are to take particular Care to make them under stand the time appointed for such our meeting and to En deavor by all reasonable means to perswade them to Come down and as an Inducement so to do you are to Present their chiefs with a Callico Shirt and a pair of Scarlet Worsted Stockings each and to distribute the four other Shirts amongst such as the chief Indians shall direct Ordered that the said Shirts and Stockings be purchased by the Clerk of this Board for the use above mentioned Which were accordingly purchased of Mr Garrett and Mr Beale vizt the Stockings of Mr Garrett & six Shirts of Mr Beale
