214 Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1707.

Which being read his Exncy received them very kindly And together with the board was pleased to declare that they had observed the said Society of people called Quakers to be very peaceable and quiett and well Affected to this her Majestys Government Especially Since her Majestys happy Accession to the Throne and that perticularly on this Occasion they had Expressed themselves to the great Satisfaction of his Excel lency and this Board And therefore Assured them of her Majestyes Gracious protection dureing such their peaceable and dutifull behaviour.
Att a Councill held at Annapolis July 17th 1707 Present His the Governour The honble Thomas Tench Esq Coll John Hamond Coll Edward Lloyd Coll Wm Holland Mr Kenelm Cheseldyn Coll Thomas Ennalls and Mr Wm Coursey. Mr Thomas Docwra came & declared before his Exncy the Governour and Councill that being in bed on Saturday night p. 70 the Instant about Tenn of the Clock Major Wilson the Sherriff of the County Sent to him & desire him to bring a Cou ple of men with him which he did and found Mr Bruff and his wife & Mr Orrell and his wife there and the people seemed much afraid. Major Wilson desired him to take his Boate and go over to Mr Joseph Hills plantation and know the meaning of the Gunns being fired Which he did and found Mr Hill very Drunk to whome he told the Sherriff had sent him to know the meaning of Severall Gunns fired there which had allarmed the Towne. Mr Hill Answered they were Merry had been Training and fired them for their pleasure and what was it to any body he would fire more against which the said Docwra diswaded him Nevertheless the said Hill opened a Trunck & took out two pistoils. And as this Declarant be lieves fired them off for that this declarant heard the report of two pistolls or other fire Armes Imediatly after. Whereupon his Exncy and the Boarde resenting Mr Joseph Hills presumtious behaviour in fireing so many Gunns in the
