118 Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1701.
Lib. X. At the Port of Annapolis Wednesday November 19th 1701 Then came Sir Thomas Lawrence, Baronett, before his Excellency the Governor & the honble Colo John Hammond of his Majestys Council, & Produced his Majestys Letters Pattents of the 11th of July 1701 appointing the said Sr Thomas Lawrence to be his Majstys Secry of this Province Whereupon his Excellency is pleased to observe that altho the swearing of such Officers has usually been before the Governor and Council yet that all due respect & reguard might be had to his Majestys Commission to the said Sr Thomas Lawrence & that the said Sr Thomas might not be prejudiced in being uncapable to act in his said Station for want of being sworn and subscribing the Test & Association ordered the oaths appointed by act of Parliament instead of the Oaths of Allegiance & supremacy & the oath of Secretary to p. 280 be administred to the said Sr Thomas Lawrence which he took & likewise Subscribed the Test and Association The said Sr Thomas Lawrence also gave his Bond in 1000 l sterling to his Majesty for the due Execution of his Office His Excellency says he does not believe there is any occa sion for Sr Thomas to be sworn anew & asks the Board if any of them have any thing further to Offer for his Majestys Service to which they say, not Then did the Secretary acquaint his Excellency & the Council that he had at present brought no order to be admit ted of his Majestys honble Council in Maryland but that he had made it his request to the Right Honble the Lords of the Council of trade that his attendance in the same might be ex cused for a time which Request they were pleased to grant unto him accordingly Examined by me Tho Lawrence Secretary W Bladen Clk of the Council
