300 Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1696/7-98.
Lib. H. D. convenient towards the head of Potomock, and that your EXnCY will be pleased to give Instructions to the Comander in chief of Stafford County & the Rangers to hold frequent correspondence wth the Honoble Collo Jno Addison and the Rangers in Maryland, who have already Instructions to do the like with these in Virginia. 8th Your Exncy is likewise desired to give orders to yr Rangers to agree with the Maryland Rangers what shall be an Alarm, and tht you will be pleased to give them charge to forbear hollowing or firing Gunns in the night unless upon occasion. These matters have been consulted and Resolved on by his Exncy the Governr & Councill of Maryland wth the advice of the Honoble the Justices of the Provincial Court, the Gentle men of a Grand Comittee for laying the Public Leavy, the Gentlemen of the Grand Jury for the body of that Province, and severall Gentlemen lately imployed to go to the said Indians and given us in charge to your Exncy In obedience whereunto for his Majestes service & the Peace and safety of his Majtes said Province of Maryland the same is hereby represented, laid before and desired of yor Exncy as aforesd which is signifyed by Your Exncyes most humble Servants Thomas Tench Wm Dent
Then produced a Copy of some proceedings taken before his Exncy the Governr and his Majtes Honoble Councill of Virginia of the 11th of August last past in Answer to a former message about the said about the sd Indians; as also another of the 10th of November instant in answer to what the sd Esqr Tench & Major Dent now laid before them, wch were read as follows Vizt
At a Council held at Mr Secretary Wormleys the 11th August 1697. Present His Exncy and Councill His Exncy laid before the Councill severall Letters & papers relating to the Indians wch occasioned the again read ing & further considering the proceedings of a Committee in Maryland confirmed by the Governr Councill and Burgesses there relating to Indians now in this Government and Agents or Gentlemen to be sent to treat with the sd Indians of whom
