Lib. H. D. Mr Sherriff being call'd to make Return of the sd Sumons issued produces to the Board a Letter of Excuse from the honrble Coll: Henry Jowles keeper (in answer to the Sumons this day sent) setting forth the Reasons of his not Coming to Councill, which was Read. His Exncy is pleased to Say that if he Cannot attend his Mats Business here in Town, he does not think fit that the Broad Seal of the Province shall be kept in a little private Countrey House, where it may be lyable to danger and hazard every p. 519 moment in being misapplyed besides other inconveniencies; the sd Coll: Jowles having offt times had Notice given him to Reside in Town for the Convenience of dispatch of Business, but has hitherto deferr'd it. Ordered therefore that the honrble Sr Thomas Laurence Baront Secry goe to Morrow Morning and Demand the Broad Seal of the sd Colonell Jowles who is hereby directed and Ordered to deliver the Same accordingly, and that it be brought by the sd Sr Thomas and deliver'd up unto his Exncy the Governr at the Port of Annapolis forthwith. His Exncy is pleas'd to say that he will give the keeping of the Broad Seal of the Province to any of the Gentlemen of the Councill from Coll: Jowles that will Come and live in Town not thinking it proper nor Safe to be kept else where, besides other inconveniences attending. Afterwards Read a Letter sent from Mr Charles Greenberry Son of the honrble Coll: Nicho Greenberry, which gives an Accot that his ffather is not at home and that he is so very lame where he is that he Cannot possibly travell. His EXnCY is pleasd to Say that there being a Gentleman come with a Depu tacon from the Rt honrble the Commrs of his Mats Customs for being Collr of the District of Pocomake caused him to issue Sumons's for calling a Councill (the rest of the Gent. living so Remote that they could not quickly be sent to and got together) and Considering that it will be Necessary for his Mats Service to give dispatch to that matter, by now admitting the sd person into his Office—Ordered therefore that he be admitted and dispatcht away to looke after his Charge accordingly. Then produced by his Exncy to the Board a Letter by him rëcd from the Rt honrble the Commrs of his Mats Customs Dated 15th of ffebry last past; thereby Signifying their having issu'd their Deputacon to Mr David Kennedy to be Collr of the Rates and Duties imposed by the Act made in the 25th year of the Reign of the King Charles the Second at Pocomake in the Province of Maryland &ca The sd Mr Kennedy is Call'd in, who Comes accordingly. He is asked to shew his Deputacon, which he produced and the Same was by Ordr Read—Ordered that the Same be Recorded together with the foremention'd Letter.
