not to exceed twenty six Dollars. Any Number of Stockings
that you can purchase not exceeding 2000 Pair we wish you
to get, if strong & Good, we shall not grumble at 16 or 18
Dollars, if the Quality deserves it, go as far as 20; perhaps
you might get the more if you advertised that you were ap-
pointed to purchase Stockings & Shirting for the Maryland
Troops and request a Preference, some People yet amongst
us would surely willingly give it. We send by this, or shall by
the first Opportunity £15000 write us of the Receipt of it and
frequently of your Success; do push the business our poor
Fellows very much want Shirts. If you have more Linen by
you than you can immediately make up, please to send it to
Mr Muir with Thread that it may be made up here and Mr
Randall, who waits for it, may be the sooner discharged.

Head Quarters West point 4 Octob 1779
Sir
I had the honor of receiveing your Excellencys Letters of
the 26th & 27th Ultimo at half after twelve O'Clock yesterday.
Immediately upon the Receipt of it, I set about concerting the
measures necessary for a cooperation with his Excellency the
Count D Estaing agreeable to the powers vested in me by the
Resolve of Congress of the 26th Ult0
I have called upon the State of Massachusetts for 2000
Militia Connecticut for 4000 New York for 2500, New Jersey
for 2000 and Pennsylvania for 1500, the last is below the
Quota that she ought to furnish, in proportion to her
strength, but I was induced to make a requisition of that
number only, upon a consideration, that we shall be obliged
to call largely upon that State for the means of transportation
of provisions and supplies of all kinds, I have also taken the
liberty, to press the States above mentioned to use the most
vigorous exertions in procuring supplies of provisions
especially of Flour, for the want of which, I fear we shall
be much embarrassed, should we draw such a head of men to-
gether as will be necessary to give our operations a tolerable
prospect of success.
I have not heard from Genl Sullivan but by report since the
30th August, I have however dispatched an Express to him
(upon a supposition that he has compleated the object of his
expedition and is upon his return) desiring him to hasten his
march, and directing him to leave as few Men as he possibly
