406 Journal and Correspondence

C. C.

[Council to H. Hollingsworth.]

Annapolis 20th May 1779
Sir
We have nothing certain from Virginia lately; from flying
Reports the Enemy have burnt Portsmouth and Suffolk and

were on their march to South Quay, that they had destroyed

Stores to great Value and it is conjectured that they design to
visit this State. There certainly is good Ground to induce your
utmost Efforts for the Removal of the Stores. I hope the
Notice you have already had has had its Weight and that if
they should go to the Head of Elk they'll find little but Knocks
We are &ca
Colo Henry Hollingsworth

[Council to C. Birckhead.]

In Council Annapolis 20th May 1779
Sir.
We have not Cartridge Boxes & Kettles or Pots. If we
have an Opportunity we shall send you Flints & Cartridge
Paper. We cannot possibly spare any more Arms, the Num-
ber we have is very deficient for the Places most likely to be
attacked
We are &ca
Colo Christopher Birkhead.

[Council to A. Buchanan.]

In Council 20th May 1779
Sir
We wrote you yesterday. Mr Martin took the Letter up
this Morning since which we received yours of yesterday.
We had some Expectation that an Essay was made to make
Cartouch & Bayonet Belts of plaited Hemp, but we have not
Time now to consult the most Signal Methods: we request
you'll give Orders to have the Bayonet Belts made on the best
Terms you can. We hear a Boat has gone up from Hampton
she was spoke by Capt Rogers but he could not hear distinctly;
we suppose she carries you later Intelligence than we have
received. By Major Smith's Return 6th March he had at the
Fort 14 spare Musquets & 13 spare Bayonets, a small Number,
but worth looking out.
Andw Buchanan Esqr We are &ca
Ll of Balto County
