the Marines who went down in the Conqueror and which were
to be returned; we flattered ourselves that a much greater
Proportion were in good Order. About a twelvemonth ago,
we sent a good many Arms to the Head of Elk to guard the
Stores there, very few have been returned. By Col. Rumsey's
Return 3d May there was in the Hands of Mr John Barnaby
at the Head of Elk " 25 Boxes & a few loose Arms, amo 500
Stand, 100 of which have not Bayonets, 300 Gun blings, 500
Cartouch Boxes & 250 Canteens;" we inclose you an Order
and wish you to send for them; we would send ourselves, but
it is not in our Power, if you send, let it be by a Man in whom
you can confide for his Prudence as well as other good
Qualities, and direct him to be cautious. We shall be obliged
to you to put Things in such a Way that the Cartridges wanted
may be made up & in such a manner as to be suitable; we
indeed have no Body that we can send Orders to in this
Matter, Capt Keeports having declined to act for the Salary
we could allow him, but from every Thing that has past, we
believe, he is not only very capable of conducting that Busi-
ness but that on such an Occasion, he would chearfully do
every Thing in his Power to promote it
