     Ordered that as well Capt Richard Hill senr as Capt Richd

   Hill junr give Answer to the sd Letter in Writing what they

   have to say, and that the same be laid before this Board

   accordingly

                  October the 9th 1695

  

     Produced & Read pursuant to Ordr as above the two fol

   lowing Answers to the aforementioned Letter, Vizt

  

        To his Exncy ffrancis Nicholson Esqr Capt

        Generall & Governr in chief of his Mats province

        of Maryland.

  

   HiSenr Having Received your Exncies Commands to make

   Answer &Ca answer to some Reflections made vpon me by Capt

          Harry Beverley in humble obedience thereto I

   Return this.

     About the latter end of August last a Gentleman vnknown

   to me came to my house, which I humbly conceive was this

   Capt Harry Beverley having with him three Men all whom I p. 242

   treated very civilly, but the Captain in a very great passion

   told me he had been very highly affronted by the Men belong

   ing to the ship then in the Harbour & commanded me to send

   my Warrant for the Master of the ship & put him in Irons, I

   demanded what Offence he had committed, he told me high

   Treason & Rebellion, I desired to know the Nature of the

   Offence, he said he would not strike to the Kings Colours till

   he fired into him, I told him I was not well acquainted with

   things of that nature but by Vertue of my Office as I was one

   of his Mats Justices of the peace, if he could make appear to

   me that any person belonging to that ship had done anything

   in contempt of his Mats Authority or by any means acted

   against his Mats intrest I would speedily take a course with

   him or them, even if it were my own Children; Wherevpon I

   sent for my two sons and asked the Capt if either of them had

   affronted him, he Answered he could not Charge them directly,

   I further told him that both the ship and my Sons would be

   here a considerable time, & would answer what he should at

   at any time charge them withall; but as to the shot he made

   at them I would give what was vsuall, with that I presented

   him with near a quarter of fat beefe which he accepted of, then
