To his Ex^ncy ffrancis Nicholson Esq^r Cap^t Gen^ll and Govern^r
in Chiefe of their Maj^ties Province of Maryland.
The Humble Representation of their Maj^ties Hono^ble Councill
of this Province.
Humbly Sheweth:
That Whereas upon the death of the Late Govern^r Copley
Esq^r and an Assembly being then Called whoe in some time
after Accordingly met at Sn^t Maryes but because their Maj^ties
Covncill were not vnanimously Agreed in whome the presi-
dent Shipp of this Councill then Rested whither in the Hono^ble
S^r Thomas Laurence Barron^t their Maj^ties Secretary & first
Councillor Named (or otherwise) in regard the said Governor

Copley had Suspended the said S^r Thomas & Coll Henry
Jowles from the said Covncill & The Hono^ble Ne^a Blackiston
being next to the said S^r Thomas & Coll Jowles named in the
said Covncill by vertue thereoff & of the said S^r Thomas &
Coll Jowleses Suspension claimed the president ship as afd &
altho' the Majority of the said Covncill were agreed and
Resolved that the Right of the presidency did by their Maj^ties
Comission & Instructions belong & appertaine to the said S^r
Thomas, Your Ex^ncy whoe by your Comission of Lievetenancy
of this Province by the said Copleys death became Comander
in Chiefe being then Absent out of this Province & accord-
ingly their Maj^ties Covncill or the Majority were resolved in a
small time to Joyne with the said S^r Thomas as their president
or head in Order to treat w^th the Assembly then met as af^d as
by the following Clauses in the Journall of the said Assembly
Contained Appeares Viz^t

Saturday September 23^th 1693.

The House Resolve themselves into a Grand Comittee to
goe upon the Conferrence yesterday appointed and doe order
and Constitute M^r Kenelm Cheseldyn Chaireman thereof.
The said Comittee Returne to the State house where M^r
Speaker reassumeing the Chaire Signified to the house that
the Covncill had acquainted him with their Receipt of a Lett^r
from S^r Edmond Andros which specifyed his haveing a
Comission for the Governm^t in Case of Govern^r Copleyes
death & therefore thought the Conference needless & withall
desired the Speaker to make knowne the same to the
house.
The said Mentioned Lett^r was brought by M^r Sherlock
Clerk of the Covncill of Virg^a from his Ex^ncy S^r Edmond
Andros their Maj^ties Govern^r of Virginia & delivered the 23^th
of Septemb^r 1693 unto the Hono^ble S^r Thomas Laurence
Baronet president of Maryland & by him Comunicated to
