                                    FOR MAN'S

                COL. DAVID FORMAN, COMMISSIONED 12 JANUARY, 1777.

                   One of the Additional 16 Regiments. It was never fully completed
               and i July, 1778, was disbanded and officers and men transferred
               mainly to the New Jersey Line.


                                    SPENCER'S

                COL. OLIVER SPENCER, COMMISSIONED 15 JANUARY, 1777.

                COL. WILLIAM MALCOLM, COMMISSIONED 30 APRIL, 1777.

                   These were 2 of the Additional 16 Regiments. They were consol
               idated as Spencer's, 22 April, 1779.


                                 8TH PENNSYLVANIA

                 RESOLVES OF CONTINENTAL CONGRESS-15 JULY, 1776.

                   "Resolved, That the battalion for the defense of the western fron-
               tiers, be raised in the counties of Westmoreland and Bedford, in the
               following proportions, to wit: seven companies in Westmoreland, and
               one company in Bedford."


               COL. DANIEL BRODHEAD, COMMISSIONED 29 SEPTEMBER, 1776.

                   This Regiment was raised for the defence of the frontier. Capt.
               Moorhead's Independent Company was attached to this Regiment.

                   Some Maryland troops were sent to Fort Pitt and Col. Brodhead
               tried to increase his Regiment, at Maryland expense, by discharging
               Maryland officers and enrolling the men in his own Regiment. Many
               of these men deserted him and returned to the Maryland Line.


                               WASHINGTON'S GUARDS

                   Circular Letter sent to Col. Alexander Spottswood and three other
               Colonels by General Washington.*
                                           Morristown, 30 April, 1777.
               Sir,
                   I want to form a company for my guard. In doing this I wish
               to be extremely cautious, because it is more than probable, that, in the
