122 Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1676-1678.
Lib. R. R. I pray keepe the inclosed letters Safe that they may be
pduced to the Counsell at next meeting I haveing no coppy of
them & Mr Sibreys letter conta more then Indian newes on
wch I have no time to reflect at prsent
Yrs ut Supra Tho: Notley.

Then was Coppy of the protection granted by the Honble
the Chancellour to Jacob Young and the Susquehanoughs
read the tenor whereof followeth viz.

Suffer the bearer hereof Jacob Young the Interpreter and
such of the Susquehannough Indians as shall be sent by them
to treate with the Governour and Counsell of this province

p. 97 to come Safely to the house of Stephen Murty in St Maries
County at any time within One month after the date of these
presents and from thence Safely to returne to New Castle
upon Delaware Bay after the said Treaty is Ended. Given
under my hand and Seale this fourth day of August in the
first yeare of his Lopps Dominion over this Province Annoq
Dom 1676.
To all Officers both military
and Civill and all other people
of this Province of Maryland

Which said Protection being read the same was approved
off by the Deputy Leivtenant & Councell here.

Ordered that a letter be sent to the Governor of Virga to
give him notice that the Deputy Govrnour & Councell here
are upon makeing peace with the Susquehannoughs which
may be for the Safety aswell of that Goverment as this province
the tenor of which letter followeth viz.

Sr
Wee have lately received intelligence from the Head of the
Bay that the Susquehanough Indians have resided at their
Old ffort about sixty miles above Palmers Island for so many
months that they have now Corne fitt to roast.
That they shortly expect the remainder of their troopes,
and as many of the Western Indians neer or beyond the
Mountaines as they have been able to perswade to come to live
with them. Wee are further informed that by the meanes of
Collonel Andrewes the Governour of New Yorke a peace
was made last Summer betweene them & their old Enemye
the Cinigo's so that now they are at Ease and out of Our
reach. This notwithstanding they have applyed themselves
to Capt Edmund Cantwell the Deputy Governour of New-
castle upon Delaware and requested a peace and trade as
