[Secretary Ridout to Calvert.]

Copy of a Letter from Mr Ridout to Mr Calvert. Philadelphia
Decr 13th 1763
Sir
As the long Continuance of a Cold which the Governor
contracted when the Commissioners met at George Town last
October made him averse to venturing so far from home as to
attend the Meeting which the Arrival of Messrs Mason &
Dixon made it necessary for the Commissioners to have at
this season in Philadelphia, I think it my Duty in His Excel-
lency's Absence to transmit you by a Ship which is just about
to sail hence for London a Copy of the Commissioners pro-
ceedings during their two last Meetings & also a brief State
of what has been already done in order to ascertain or describe
the Tangent Line so that you may be the better enabled to
judge whether it is expedient or not to have another Line run
for a Tangent with the Transit Instrument agreeable to the
Hints you were pleased to recommend to the Commissioners
Consideration, but if you & the Proprietors of Pennsylvania
shall agree to have that Expence avoided, it is hoped you will
be pleased to signify as much to the Commissioners as soon
as possible for unless a Letter to that purport is received by
us before the 15th of June Messs Mason & Dixon are as you
will observe by their Instructions to go down at all Events to the
Middle Point in order to run up a new Line the Pennsylvania

Letter Bk IV.
