of the Council of Safety, 1776. 289

There have been very few applications made to the Field
officers and as we were of opinion no time was to be delayed,
if any service was expected this fall from the Company to be
raised in this Battalion, we met yesterday and have recom-
mended; but I am really apprehensive there will be great
difficulty in arming them, if it is to be done with the militia
arms. There may be a few musketts offered for sale and I
believe but few; as for impressing which the Convention has
given authority for, I shall not chuse by any means, to do it
and believe the other Gent will not.
I most heartily wish some mode could be adopted to restore
harmony to this distracted County, but which way it can be
effected I know not. Some are displeased with the Conven-
tion or Council of Safety appointing and others I believe are not.
I have been informed the Convention has adjourned till
Monday week, which is the reason of my giving your board
the trouble of this; but am determined if I can make it con-
venient, to attend their next meeting, in hopes that something
may be done to settle the unhappy Disputes.
I am Gent your mo: obedt Servt
