[Council to Maryland Deputies.]
To the Deputies of Maryland in Congress.
Gentlemen.
The Convention have ordered that the sum of £10,000, be
appropriated to fortify the City of Annapolis and place obstruc-
tions in the River Severn, but as we have not, nor know of an
Engineer properly qualified to carry on the works, and your
station may perhaps afford you an opportunity of assisting us,
with one, we beg you will make enquiry for, and recommend
to us some Person of knowledge and experience in that ser-
vice; we are anxious to comply with the resolve of Convention,
as Annapolis is very undefensible and we presume from it's
advantageous situation may be an object with the enemy.
We are so thronged with business that we cannot now write
you fully, but will as soon as we have a little Leisure; as the
Conveniencies may not be provided for Colo Smallwood and
the Troops by the Time they reach Phila, we request you will
give him all the assistance you can; we also send you inclosed
a resolve of our Convention relating to our regular forces
which we desire you will communicate to the Brigadier General
of the Flying Camp.
P. S. We take the liberty of recommending Captn Stricker
to you as a Person proper for a Field Officer in the German
Battalion, and think the service will be benefitted by his
Appointment, If he should be commissioned the sooner 'tis
done the better, as it will probably be a great inducement to
his Countrymen to enlist.

[Council to Alexander.]
To Robr Alexander Esqr
Sir
The Council of Safety are much at a loss in respect to the
contracts made by you in Balto, they have wrote to you sev-
eral Times to transmit them, but have never had the pleasure
to receive them or a Line from you on the subject.
There is a real necessity for their being lodged here as some
of the Artificers do not comply with their Contracts, and we
are subject to two Inconveniences, the ignorance of the real
Contract and the want of Power to enforce it
