advise you in my former letter how matters were going on
here. Which is still the case this week I think must bring
much flour in. I am sir with all respect your very obedt huml
Servt Hny Courtenay.
Balto 16 Jany 1776.
To Charles Carroll Esqr Barrister.


At a Meeting of the [Council of Safety] of Maryland at
Annapolis on Thursday 18th January 1776:

Were present.
The Honble Daniel of St Thomas Jenifer Esqr
Charles Carroll (Barrister)
Benjamin Rumsey &
James Tilghman Esqrs

The above members were qualified before Mr Thomas
Brooke Hodgkin by taking the Oath prescribed by the Con-
vention.
Gabriel Duvall was appointed Clerk and qualified before
Mr Hodgkin by taking the Oath directed by the Convention.
The Honble Daniel of St Thomas Jenifer Esqr was chosen
President.
Ordered, That Captain John Allen Thomas be allowed seven
Shillings and six Pence per Week for the Subsistence of each
Recruit till otherwise ordered by the Council.
Ordered, That the Treasurer of the Western Shore pay to
Captain Thomas two hundred pounds common money to
enable him to advance to, and subsist his Recruits.
Ordered, That the Treasurer of the Western Shore pay to
Captain Barton Lucas One hundred and twenty pounds com-
mon Money for the Purpose mentioned in the above Order.
Council adjourns till Tomorrow Morning half after 9 O'Clock.

[Friday] 19. January 1776.
Council met. present [the] same members as yesterday, and
also John Hall Esq. who was qualified before Mr Jenifer by
taking the Oath prescribed by the Convention.
Ordered, That the Treasurer of the Western Shore pay to
Mr Archibald Buchanan seven hundred and eight pounds
seven shillings and four pence common money, being the Bal-
lance of his Account with the Province, as per Account filed.
Adjourned till 3 o'Clock, and met pursuant to Adjournment.
Ordered, That the Treasurer of the Western Shore pay to
Mr Joseph Baxter One hundred and twenty Pounds common
money for Subsist and advance money for the Company of
regular Forces to be raised by Capt. Thomas Ewing.
