meeting of the Convention which is now soon. I will be
obliged to you if you will write me by the bearer and let me
know if it will be needfull for me to attend the convention or
not, and what time you would recommend for me to go down.
I have had no letters from either the Capt or Supercargo since
those I laid before you. one of the sailors that went out in
the schooner is come to town and sundry Gentlemen of this
place who were at St Eustatia and can give a full accot of that
seizure of her being condemned and sold. I am going
tomorrow to the Country and cannot be home before the 15th
of this month.

Baltimore Town 1st May 1776.
Gentlemen: Mr Campbell by this conveyance resigns his
commission of first Lieut in my Company in order to be of
more essential service to his country by distressing the trade
of our Enemies in a Privateer fitted out by a Gentlemen of
this town. If it does not interfere too much with a plan you
may have laid down for promotions in the Regular Service, I
shall be exceeding happy to have my second Lieut appointed
to the vacancy, he is very capable & more acquainted with the
men & their dispositions & of consequence can be of more use
in the Company than a stranger. — should you have determined
to raise the officers according to their seniority. I doubt not
you have heard of Mr Kids character (who is eldest 2nd Lieut)
& I rest satisfied you will not promote any person who is not
equal to it. should you not have promised the Ensigncy thai

will be vacant, I shall be happy to have my Brother James in
the service, he has been in the Independant Compy of this
Town ever since its formation & understands the duty as well
as most young officers, I am Gentlemen

Sir: Several Gentlemen here are desirous to send me out
in a privateer from this place, my own inclination also, leads
me to you having been accustomed to the sea service, we
have taken great pains to get a vessel fit for the purpose, and
think we have succeeded, you'l receive enclosed the commis-
sion with which I was honour'd; Retaining the utmost grati-
