Therefore should you find any Difficulty arise in the Manage-
ment of the Works under your Care, you may (if you think
proper) apply to their Managers for such Instructions as you
may want.
The Council of Safety is very desirous of knowing what
Forwardness the Works under your management are in, and
request you would from Time to Time communicate to them
what Quantity of crude Nitre you expect to furnish the public
with.
Adjourned till next Day half after 9 O'Clock.

[Council to Philadelphia Committee.]

To the Committee of Safety of Philadelphia.
Gentn :
By Order of the last Convention a sum of Money was
appropriated for the erecting a Manufactory of Salt Petre in
every County of this Province and Supervisors in each County
were appointed to carry the same into Execution.
It was also earnestly recommended to the People to manu-
facture crude Nitre in their private Families and an ample Price
was directed to be paid them for what they should make and
deliver to each Supervisor.
We are not insensible of the natural Advantages we possess
for manufacturing that necessary Article and have some Men
skilful in promoting it residing among us, but are nevertheless
greatly indebted to you for your kind and obliging Offer of
instructing such Persons of our Province as may be thought
necessary at your Public Works — An offer that may be of great
Service to our Supervisors living distant from the Residence
of our Men of Skill, to whom we shall communicate the same
and press them to accept it.

To Gustavus Scott Esqr
Sir.
The Council of Safety have stipulated and agreed with a
Contractor for supplying the regular Forces of this Province
with Provisions, but as some Time must be given to provide the
several Articles which compose a Ration and it cannot rea-
sonably be expected he will be able to furnish them earlier
than the 10th of next Month, the Troops must be subsisted
on the 7/6 pr Week allowed for that Purpose in the Instruc-
tions enlisting them.
