100 Journal and Correspondence

Ordered, That he rank as youngest Captain of the said
Battalion.
Council adjourns till Tomorrow morning half after 9 O'Clock

Original.

[Youst to Council.]

George Town 17th Jany 1776.
Gentlemen. Having applied to The Committee of observa-
tion for a sufficient quantity of Powder for proving the guns,
which I have engaged to furnish The Council of Safety, which
I have refused without your approbation should be glad you
would please to nominate a man in Town to see the Guns
proved as it is inconvenient to me, at present to leave the
Business. Mr Deakins has left town, which prevent his
writing, to you according to agreement, I hope gentlemen
youl Please to let me know what I am to expect as the guns
cannot be delivered or finished otherwise than by your granting
a Licence for Powder.
I am gentlemen your very humble Servt
John Youste.

Original.

[J. Murray to Council.]
Gent:
The Bearer hereof Mr James Campbell, (who acted as a
Capt of our Militia) had the Honour, on application of being
appointed a Lieut, of the Light Infantry Company at our last
Convention. I am to beg Leave to introduce this Gentleman
to you, as particularly worthy your notice
I think upon Conversation with him he may afford some
very useful Hints in those Branches that we, at this Time
stand so much in need of, I mean Gunnery & Fortification.
Have known him for several years in Character of Capt of a
Ship, the Seafaring Life having been his calling from his
Infancy: and think, to do him Justice in that Scene or any
other that he engages in, he will merit Esteem. I believe he
brings with him a Plan of a Floating Battery, his own Inven-
tion, which may very probably afford matter for Improvement,
should the Original fail. If you attempt Fortification and are
not already supplyed with an abler Hand, believe you'll find
him very cleaver in drawing & taking Charts of yr Harbours
& Bay and pointing out the fittest Place to erect Fortifications
on. With due Regard I remain —
Gent: Your hum Servt
James Murray
Cambridge 20th Janry 1776.
