Sir
From the Copy you have been pleased to favour me with of
General Forbes letter to you from Shippensburgh of the 3d of
Septr relating to that unlucky affair at Philadelphia, I see
Clearly that an attempt is made to impose on the General not
only by exaggerating and misrepresenting things that have
some foundation in truth, but also in asserting what never
existed; for that reason I hope you will permit me to lay
before you a full state of the Transaction betwixt Mr Howell
and me, in which I shall endeavour to confine myself to such
facts as do not alone depend on that Gentlemans Veracity
nor mine, but on Original papers to which I shall refer, and
on what Secretary Peters, Mr Chew, the kings attorney, and
Mr Israel Pemberton know of the affair, if any thing is men-
tioned of what passed betwixt Mr Howel and me by our-
selves, it will have such a Connection with what came within
the knowledge of those Gentlemen, that it will not be difficult
to discover the truth, and as I should be extremely sorry that
General Forbes should Continue the same opinion of me, that
he must have when he wrote to your Excellency on the 3d of
Sept to me on the 28 Augt and to Mr Howell on the 4 of
Sept I flatter myself that if on the perusal of the papers I shall
