his own hands, leaving to Baltimore, however, his territorial possessions
and personal revenues. Maryland thus became a royal government,
and so continued for twenty-five years, though the charter was never
annulled.

Religious toleration in Maryland now ceased. The Episcopal Church
was established, the country divided into parishes, and a contribution
laid on all tithables to support the ministry. Dissenters were to some
extent connived at; but the Catholics were subjected to the usual
disabilities, and the penal statutes suspended over their heads.
