or either of Them, occasionally, as you shall find it Expedient
for the General Service.
I am
Sir
Your most obedient
humble Servant
T Robinson.
Govr of Maryland

[Sharpe to W. and J. Sharpe.]

Annapolis Novem 3d 1754.

To Mr Wm & I Sharpe
With His Majestys & Ld Baltimores Commission I received
yesterday fortnight your kind & affectionate Letter dated the
6th of July last apprizing me of the honour that His Majesty
had been pleased to confer on me upon your Account & the favourable mention made of me by the Gentn to whom I have

in pursuance of your Advice addressed the inclosed Letters.
I have taken a more early Opportunity of acknowledging the
Receipt of Sr Thos Robinson's Letter with His Majesty's Com-
mission but as there is a possibility of my Letter to him being
miscarried, I thought it not improper to desire you to present
him also the inclosed. I did but yesterday return from Vir-
ginia where I had been since the 19th Inst advising & consult-
ing with Governor Dinwiddie & Mr Dobbs on the most expe-
dient measures for protecting these his Majesty's Dominions
from the Encroachments of his Enemies & in making some
Preparations for an Enterprise this winter against the Enemy's
Fort on Monongahela if we find it practicable & can draw a
sufficient Body of Troops together for that Service. The
Forces already on Foot amount to near 600 Men & I hope
will be soon 1000 tho I have learnt not to entertain very san-
guine hopes of the Resolutions of American Assemblies, from
which Opinion of mine I think you will see little Room for
dissenting when you consider with what Indifference they have
hitherto behaved & looked on the Incursions of their ambitious

& insulting Enemies. As often as they have been convened
urged & intreated to aid each other in defending his Majestys
Territories & their own Properties so often almost have they as
it were unanimously refused to provide against the Dangers
that threaten them or endeavoured to cast an Odium on their
respective Goverrs by laying them under a necessity of rejecting
such Bills as were presented them with the specious Titles of
Acts for His Majesty's Service & the better Defence & Security
of the British Colonies. The Province of Massachusetts Bay
