Notes:
1. Long was defeated by Dashiell 834 votes to 818,
but protested the result because of the presence of and interference by
Union soldiers at the polls throughout the county. The soldiers were accused
of widespread intimidation of voters and of harassing and arresting election
judges in an effort to secure the election of Unionist candidates. Dashiell
was sworn in December 15, but Long did not relinquish the office until
December 22. Dashiell then officially assumed authority on January 5, 1865,
the next session of the Orphans Court. See GOVERNOR (Election Returns)
Contested Election Papers, 1864, MdHR 40,132-1735/1754 [MSA S108-44, 2/50/1/23]
2. Dashiell died in office on November 19, 1865. Gale was appointed to fill the position on November 23.
3. Dixon resigned on November 19, 1907.
4. Waller resigned April 13, 1915. Maddox was appointed to serve the remainder of his term.
