Placing Research & Copy Orders

For genealogical research services, please see the list of professional genealogists and researchers. The Archives offers research for legal purposes only, on a fee-for-service basis.  Depending on the type of work requested, different fees might apply.  See our fee schedule for details.

METHODS OF PLACING AN ORDER

You may place an order for research or copy services for legal purposes, via mail, email, or FAX.  We require full contact information (name, mailing address, phone, and FAX and/or email when applicable).  Orders are processed in the order in which they are received.  Please see the fee schedule for costs and order requirements.

We will accept credit card payments using Visa, Mastercard, and Discover.  Orders must include cardholder's full name, card number, expiration date, and "v-code" (the numbers on the signature line on the back of the card).  Checks  and money orders are also accepted.  Please do not send cash.

CERTIFICATION
All documents, including documents delivered on CD ROM, can be certified for an additional $10.00 per document.

LEGAL RECORDS

In order to locate a civil or criminal court case, we require the following information:

1) name of defendant
2) jurisdiction (county or Baltimore City) in which the case was heard
3) court (Circuit or District Court, etc.) in which the case was heard
4) year of case
5) charge (for criminal files)
6) [case number, if known]

If you provide the case number, copies are $10.00 per document.  We reproduce all pages of the particular document(s) requested from a case file, up to 20 pages for the $10.00 fee.  Additional pages are $1.00 per page.  Lengthy documents may be available only in electronic form.  Paper copies and CD ROMs can be certified for an additional fee of $10.00.

If Archives staff does the research to locate the case number and file, a research and copy fee of $25.00 per document applies, up to 20 pages for the $25.00 fee.  Additional pages are $1.00 per page.  Lengthy documents may be available only on CD ROM.  Paper copies and CD ROMs can be certified for an additional fee of $10.00.

See the Guide to Government Records for our court record holdings.  Many are found among the Transferred Records series.

RESEARCH - VITAL RECORDS (birth & death records)

RESEARCH (other than birth & death records)

For legal purposes the reference staff will search for one name, in one index, and provide a copy of one document.  The research and copy fee is $25.00 per document, up to 20 pages for the $25.00 fee.  Additional pages are $1.00 per page.  Lengthy documents may only be available only on CD ROM.  Paper copies and CD ROMs can be certified for an additional fee of $10.00.

We do not search unindexed records or create family trees.  For these services, please see the list of professional genealogists and researchers.

COPIES WITH SPECIFIC CITATIONS
If you can provide the full citation for a record (using the Guide to Government Records or other finding aid), the cost is $10.00 per document, up to 20 pages for the $10.00 fee.  Additional pages are $1.00 per page.  Lengthy documents may only be available on CD ROM.  Paper copies and CD ROMs can be certified for an additional fee of $10.00.  A full citation must have full name, type of record, volume and page number or box and folder number, date, and county.
