The Dye is Cast

Thomas Stone was born in 1743 in Charles County, Maryland. He received his legal training from Thomas Johnson, Jr. and was admitted to the bar in 1764. StoneHe was a delegate to the Continental Congress and one of the state’s four signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Stone initially hoped for a peaceful resolution with Britain. His dread over the impending war is was evident in athis letter of May 22, 17765 letter to his friend James Hollyday: “The Dye is cast. The fatal Stab is given to any future Connection between this Country & Britain, except in the relation of Conqueror & vanquished, which I can't think of without Horror & Indignation…”
