Born in Hagerstown, Maryland, July 18, 1922. Attended Mercersberg Military Academy, Mercersberg, Pennsylvania. Served in U.S. Army Infantry, 1942-46 (European Theatre, Bronze Star, Purple Heart). Dartmouth College, A.B., 1948; University of Virginia School of Law, LL.B., 1951 (board of managers, Law Review). Admitted to Maryland Bar, 1951. Member, Federal, American, Maryland State and Baltimore City Bar Associations; Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference. Associate, Marbury, Miller, and Evans, 1951-52. Managing partner, Piper and Marbury, 1966-71 (associate, 1952-58; partner, 1958-71). Instructor, McCoy College of The Johns Hopkins University, 1954-62. Board of Directors, Legal Aid Society, 1958-71; Commercial Industrial Combined Health Appeal, 1964-71. Board of Directors, Maryland Division, American Cancer Society, 1958-71 (chair, 1969-71).
