Report to Governor, Senate Education, Health, & Environmental Affairs Committee, & House Ways & Means Committee due Dec. 30, 2016 (Chapter 411, Acts of 2015; Chapter 235, Acts of 2016).

In June 2015, the Task Force to Study the Implementation of a Dyslexia Education Program was formed (Chapter 411, Acts of 2015). Dyslexia is an unexpected difficulty in reading for an individual with the intelligence and motivation to read well.

The Task Force charge is to determine how Maryland public school students currently are identified and treated for dyslexia; how other states identify and treat students with dyslexia; and what the appropriate structure would be for a dyslexia education program. Further, the Task Force will make recommendations on the feasibility of funding a dyslexia education program either through the State Department of Education or other sources; methodologies for testing and identifying dyslexia and predyslexia in students; the appropriate age to begin testing students for dyslexia; and current best practices for treating and educating students identified as dyslexic or predyslexic. Next, the Task Force is to develop a pilot program to be implemented in a limited geographical area. Finally, the Task Force will recommend definitions for "dyslexia" and "targeted students," and determine the components and costs of successful dyslexia programs in other states (Chapter 235, Acts of 2016).

Originally to end on June 30, 2016, authorization for the Task Force was extended to June 30, 2017, and two members added (Chapter 235, Acts of 2016).
