The Task Force on the Environmental Effects of Methyl Tertiary-Butyl Ether (MTBE) was formed in 2000 (Chapter 415, Acts of 2000). Its charge was to determine and assess the environmental and health risks associated with ground and surface water contamination from MTBE, and examine national and regional efforts concerned with such contamination. A plan to minimize and counteract environmental and health risks from such contamination was drawn up by the Task Force. Additionally, the Task Force explored alternatives to MTBE, including ethanol and oxygenated fuel for reformulating gasoline to reduce air toxic emissions and pollutants that form ground-level ozone.
On December 20, 2001, the Task Force reported to the Governor and General Assembly.
