    [photo, Latrobe Column Capital, before Miller Senate Office Building, 11 Bladen St., Annapolis, Maryland] Benjamin Henry Latrobe introduced the profession of architecture and the Greek Revival style to the United States.

Designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe in 1820, this Ionic capital was part of twelve columns of the Baltimore Exchange. In 1902, it moved to the old Court of Appeals Building in Annapolis, and more recently was placed before the Miller Senate Office Building.

    Baltimore built the first monument to honor George Washington. Completed in 1829, the Baltimore Washington Monument was the work of architect Robert Mills (1781-1855). Mills later designed the Washington Monument erected in the nation's capital.
