Summer Internship - Paper and Book Conservation

Who:  Undergraduate or graduate-level college student attending a Maryland institution or a Maryland resident attending an of-of-state college or university for a paid summer internship in paper and book conservation. Previous experience or education relating to museums, libraries, history or art is preferred. Certain other skills noted below may be substituted for this experience.

  • Cover letter
  • Maryland State Employment Application Form (MS 100) - may be downloaded at http://www.mdsa.net/msa/intromsa/employ/doc/ms100.doc
Note:  There is no announcement number.  Use "Summer Intern" as the job title on the form.
  • College transcripts
  • A letter of recommendation from a faculty member
  • A sample of the applicant's academic writing
  • Documentation of hand skills: CD or prints of photographs representative of your work; a narrative describing your revelant work; or a detailed list of your relevant work.

What:  During the ten-week paid summer program, the intern will help the librarian identify books in need of repair or more extensive conservation; repair and conserve these, make boxes and other protective enclosures for rare books and delicate pamphlets, and cover and relabel these. Additionally, the intern will learn to disbind, mend and properly rehouse newspapers to reduce likelihood of future damage, and to perform basic mends to maps as taught by Archives' conservators. Excellent hand skills, including the manipulation of three-dimensional objects, and attention to detail are essential. (For example, if you have a talent for painting or drawing, or have a knack for handicrafts, sewing, woodworking or similar things, you may have the necessary manual dexterity.) The ability to concentrate on one task for a long period of time is also helpful. The position assumes an appreciation of books as artifacts. Some assignments may require occasional off-site work. The position reports to the librarian with conservation training provided by Archives conservators in our conservation laboratory. Interns will receive an hourly wage, paid bi-weekly. Hourly rates are based on education level: undergraduate at $10.99 per hour, and graduate at $11.61 per hour.
