Summer Internship - Digitization, Archival File Management,
and Electronic Archives



Who:  High school, undergraduate or graduate level college students attending Maryland schools or Maryland residents attending out-of-state schools are eligible to apply. The competitive selection process is based on an evaluation of the following application materials:

  • Cover letter  (statement of  how you will benefit from the program and how the agency will benefit from your participation)
  • Maryland State Employment Application Form (MS 100) - may be downloaded at http://www.mdsa.net/msa/intromsa/employ/doc/ms100.doc
    Note:  There is no announcement number.  Use "Summer Intern" as the job title on the form.
  • Official copy of academic transcripts, both undergraduate and graduate, if applicable
  • A letter of recommendation from a faculty member
  • A sample of the applicant's academic writing (copy of a paper written for class is accepted)

What:During the ten-week paid summer program, interns will engage in a variety of activities related to the management, processing, managing, and digitization archival collections. Individual intern assignments will vary, but duties may include electronic imaging, scanning, image processing, accessioning, cataloging and both paper and electronic file management. The intern program includes a heavy focus on the application of computer technology to both the historical method and archival practice. Some assignments may require regular off-site work. Interns will receive an hourly wage, paid bi-weekly. Hourly rates are based on education level: high school at $9.06 per hour, undergraduate at $10.99 per hour, and graduate at $11.61 per hour.

When:  Wednesday, June 5 - Tuesday, August 13, 2013  
Positions are Monday through Friday, 35 hours per week

We will attempt to notify candidates of decisions on Monday, April 29, 2013. It is not necessary to be a history major to participate in the program, and students of other disciplines are encouraged to apply.
