Two men, Leonard Farrell and Charles Jones, were arrested for stealing money from Davis and Evans' office September 7, 1926. 1929, the Davises owed $1177.56 on 1204 Madison when sale of property occurred.
Sale advertised in Daily Record as to occur on April 11, 1929. In
June, there was a decree in personam issued by the court, $1333.79 still
owed by the Davises to Whittier B&L. A subpoena to answer the
decree lists Mrs. Davis living at 263 W. Hoffman, while her husband was
Non Est. Initial sale noted in Gibson binder p. 131, April 23, 1927.
Mary E. Dowd, Agnes R. Dowd, Katharine
A. Dowd, Loretta Dowd, and the Lafayette Square Protective Association
v. Frederick I. Scott, Henry Johnson, and Ellen J. Sheckells
Davis & Evans for Scott, who was renting his house to Henry Johnson,
who was black, which violated the neighborhood covenant that the 1100 block
of West Franklin had signed. Suit filed January 7, 1926, requesting an
injunction restraining Johnson from living at 1107 W. Franklin. Sheckells
was named as a defendant by virtue of having rented the house to Scott
for 99 years in December, 1925. A preliminary injunction was issued
by the court on January 11. Johnson was put in jail on February
5, for violating the injunction; he was released three days later.
A petition by Mary E. Dowd indicates that she was taking similar action
against a number of other people. See also All
Saint's Evangelical Lutheran Church v. George Ahrling et. al., 1929,
in which Davis represented Scott in another case regarding the same covenant.
In that case, the covenant was struck down, and the injunction against
Scott was subsequently dissolved.

of Baltimore City v. John B. Watkins
Davis & Evans for defendant, George L. Pendleton for plaintiff.
Suit filed January 11, 1926. Plaintiff alleged that after Watkins
was a preacher of a church on Forrest Street under the auspices of the
Conference, and upon his resignation in June, 1925, he declined to return
property issued to him. Defendant filed demurrer, January 15, 1926. Outcome
of case unclear.
Safe Deposit & Trust Co., Trustee
of Henry F. Zollickoffer, et al v. Mary Z. Rowland, et. al.

deceased's wife to use as a life tenant. The house was 1204 Madison Ave.,
and was purchased by J. Steward Davis and his wife. Note pages 50 and 66-67
of the Court Papers.
Robert Richardson v. The Central Savings Bank and Nancy Henderson
Davis & Evans for plaintiff, Hawkins & McMechen for Henderson.
Suit filed May 19, 1926. Plaintiff alleged that prior to the death of his
wife, Lena, on May 14, 1926, she had moved the savings account that they
jointly held to her sister, Nancy Henderson, without the knowledge of the
defendant. The transfer illegally occurred in 1920 or 1922.
On July 28, 1926, the court ruled that the money in question belonged to
Henderson, and dismissed the plaintiff's complaint.
Robert Richardson v. The Provident Savings Bank and Nancy Henderson

by the court, July 28, 1926. Same accusations as above case, only

alleged that she bought a new car on installments, and that she made the
purchase in the the name of the defendant for "reasons of convenience,"
at which point the defendant took the car for himself. Defendant
maintained that he purchased the car, and that while the defendant did
give him money towards the purchase, it was as a gift. Evidently
a settlement was worked out, as the court ordered on November 24, 1926,
that the car be placed in the names of both parties and be held jointly.
Joseph C. King, Ellanora King and John C. King v. Emma Howard
and Blanche King
Davis & Evans for plaintiffs, suit to force sale of real estate.

upon her death on September 8, 1926. Ellanora King was wife of Joseph,
and Blanche was wife of John; Blanche had left her husband and was living
in Virginia; Emma Howard was the grand-niece of the deceased, John was
a grandnephew, and Joseph a nephew. Plaintiffs seem to have wanted
to sell the house, and the suit was to force that sale. Emma gave
her assent to the sale in December, 1926. House was sold May 9, 1927,
for $1100, with George Evans acting as trustee. Case lingered on
for some time as various claims were made on the estate, all handled by
Evans. Final auditor's report issued in June 13, 1928.

to organize the use of a moderator, a respected Baptist minister named
Rev. D.G. Mack, to help facilitate the elections.

indicate that at the end of September, 1925, they owed $153.00. No purchases
were made (on account) after December, 1925. Davis made several $25.00
payments in the beginning of 1926, but none after May. Davis took no action
in the suit; judement by default, November 30, 1926, Davis to pay $126.93.
BALTIMORE CITY COURT (Cases Insitituted) The Hecht Co. v. Davis, 1926, 59C, Nov RD 10, "box 1305," p. 1233 [T556-59, 3/34/3/17]
Home Credit Co. v. James Stewart Davis and Blanche M. Davis
Fi. Fa. suit to recover money owed by the Davis’ on promissory note
for $427.20, filed December 20, 1926. Debt owed to Republic Electric
Co. The note came due in October of 1926, two years after it was signed.
The Davises were to pay $17.80 a month. In December, 1926, no payments
had been received and the matter proceeded to the Superior Court.
Fi. Fa. was filed in Superior Court in March, 1927, and an order was issued
to seize the Davises house at 1204 Madison Ave., described as a “3 Story
Brick Dwelling.” A notation in the court papers indicates that the
Davises owed $498.89 at this point in time. It is unclear exactly
what happened regarding that order, as the Davises were still living at
that address in December, 1928 when Fi. Fa. was issued again. However,
the Fi. Fa. writ dated January 14, 1929 does note that they live in the
“1st + 2nd floor.” The Davises total debt was by now $554.99.
This writ ordered that the Davises furniture be seized, listing it in detail,
but it appears to not have been seized. An annotation to the order by the
Home Credit Co.’s attorney says “Chattels left as found at risk of Plaintiff.”
No further information is listed.
